By Kelly Dearmore. Welcome to 5DaysOfTheDead. On Friday, Dec. The band, in any of its many forms, hasn't performed in Dallas since October ofso we thought it would be fitting to spend a few days looking at how the group became legends and why its legacy is as strong today as it ever was. For many legendary bands, a cleverly designed logo is every bit as iconic as the band name.
It should come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead have a small stable of iconography to dig into. Without question, the single most recognized image for the band, even more so than Garcia's face probably, is the "Steal Your Face" design. Also commonly referred to as the "lightning skull," the concept was born out of necessity, really. That record's front cover features Stanley "Mouse" Miller's "rose skeleton" design that some fans argue belongs in any serious conversation of Grateful Dead art so here it is!
Though the creation of the lightning skull design seems rather benign and functional, its overall meaning has soared above its humble origins. There are theories floating around that the bolt signifies the transformative powers of nature's all-consuming strength. According to his Owsley's personal websitethe bears' stride "are quite obviously those of a high-stepping march. Some have theorized that the colorful chorus line of lovable teddy bears is also partly inspired by Jerry Garcia's "Papa Bear" nickname.
Further message board and chat room speculation suggests the band leader wasn't terribly fond of the lightning skull, so maybe a friendlier, cuter artistic manifestation of his band's spirit was in order?Old Movie Stars Dance to Uptown Funk
You'll surely see both of these iconic logos on Dec. Kelly Dearmore. Born and raised in Texas, Kelly has loved music since he first heard Waylon Jennings sing the Dukes of Hazzard theme song on television as a sheltered young lad growing up in Lone Star, Texas. Yes, that's the tiny East Texas town's real name.
Since then, they've become a symbol of the band and the fun-loving spirit of its fanbase, inspiring a wide range of collectibles including plush toys, bumper stickers, magnets and even costumes. The shoe itself is an interpretation of the actual bears. It features a fuzzy, faux fur upper and jagged Swoosh branding inspired by the bears' jester collars. You'll also notice a stash pocket behind the tongue, which aligns with a certain recreational activity that Deadheads are known to regularly partake in.
According to Instagram user underratedphotographythis pair is one of three "Grateful Dead Bear" shoes that will be releasing as part of a pack, reminiscent of the "Three Bears" Pack that dropped in There's no confirmed release date at the moment, but we'll continue to follow the story here at Sole Collector. More than just a symbol, the bears represent the band's influential audio engineer, who was nicknamed Bear.

In Nike.Drummer Mickey Hart and non-performing lyricist Robert Hunter joined in With the exception of McKernan, who died inand Hart, who took time off from tothe core of the band stayed together for its entire year history. After the death of Garcia informer members of the band, along with other musicians, toured as the Other Ones in, andand the Dead in, and Inthe four surviving core members marked the band's 50th anniversary in a series of concerts that were billed as their last performances together.
They continued playing bar shows as the Warlocks, but quickly changed its name after finding out that the Velvet Underground had put out a record under the same name. The name " Grateful Dead " was chosen from a dictionary. In that silvery elf-voice he said to me, 'Hey, man, how about the Grateful Dead? Other supporting personnel who signed on early included Rock Scullywho heard of the band from Kesey and signed on as manager after meeting them at the Big Beat Acid Test; Stewart Brand"with his side show of taped music and slides of Indian life, a multimedia presentation" at the Big Beat and then, expanded, at the Trips Festival; and Owsley Stanleythe "Acid King" whose LSD supplied the tests and who, in earlybecame the band's financial backer, renting them a house on the fringes of Watts and buying them sound equipment.
One of the group's earliest major performances in was the Mantra-Rock Dance —a musical event held on January 29,at the Avalon Ballroom by the San Francisco Hare Krishna temple. Classically trained trumpeter Phil Lesh performed on bass guitar. Bob Weirthe youngest original member of the group, played rhythm guitar. Ron "Pigpen" McKernan played keyboards and harmonica until shortly before his death in at the age of Garcia, Weir, and McKernan shared the lead vocal duties more or less equally; Lesh only sang a few leads, but his tenor was a key part of the band's three-part vocal harmonies.
Bill Kreutzmann played drumsand in September was joined by a second drummer, New York City native Mickey Hartwho also played a wide variety of other percussion instruments. On January 31,the local police raided their hotel on Bourbon Streetand arrested and charged a total of 19 people with possession of various drugs. Eventually, the charges were dismissed, except those against sound engineer Owsley Stanleywho was already facing charges in California for manufacturing LSD.
This event was later memorialized in the lyrics of the song " Truckin' ", a single from American Beauty which reached number 64 on the charts. Mickey Hart took time off from the Grateful Dead beginning in February leaving Kreutzmann once again as the sole percussionist. Hart rejoined the Grateful Dead for good in October Tom "TC" Constanten was added as a second keyboardist from towhile Pigpen also played various percussion instruments and sang.
After Constanten's departure, Pigpen reclaimed his position as sole keyboardist. Less than two years later, in latePigpen was joined by another keyboardist, Keith Godchauxwho played grand piano alongside Pigpen's Hammond B-3 organ.
Following the Grateful Dead's " Europe '72 " tour, Pigpen's health had deteriorated to the point that he could no longer tour with the band. His final concert appearance was June 17,at the Hollywood Bowlin Los Angeles; he died on March 8, of complications from liver damage. The death of Pigpen did not slow the band down, and they continued with their new members. They soon formed their own record group, Grateful Dead Records. It became their biggest commercial success thus far.
Not long after that album's release however, the Dead decided to take a hiatus from live touring. Before embarking on the hiatus, the band performed a series of five concerts at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco in October In Septemberthe Dead released their eighth studio album, Blues for Allah.
They resumed touring in June Their new contract soon produced Terrapin Station in The band's tour in the spring of that year is held in high regard by their fans, and their concert of May 8 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York is often considered to be one of the best performances of their career.
Following the departure of the Godchauxs, Brent Mydland joined as keyboardist and vocalist and was considered "the perfect fit".
Mydland was the keyboardist for the Grateful Dead for 11 years until his death by narcotics overdose in July becoming the third keyboardist to die.
Shortly after Mydland found his place in the early s, Garcia's health began to decline. His drug habits caused him to lose his liveliness on stage. After beginning to curtail his opiate usage in gradually, Garcia slipped into a diabetic coma for several days in July After he recovered, the band released In the Dark in Julywhich became their best selling studio album and produced their only top single, " Touch of Grey ".
Mydland died after the summer tour in and Vince Welnickformer keyboardist for the Tubesjoined as a band member, while Bruce Hornsbywho had a successful career with his band the Range, joined as a touring member.
